UNODC enhances the capacities of the Territorial Commission for Combating Trafficking in Persons and Forced Labour of Navoiy Region of Uzbekistan

UNODC in partnership with the Territorial Commission on Combating Trafficking in Persons and the Ministry of the Internal Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Winrock International conducted a two-day Train of Trainer Seminar “Enhancing the Capacities of Local Actors in Countering Trafficking in Persons” (the ToT regional seminar) on 24 to 25 March, in Navoiy region of Uzbekistan.

“Aimed at building a holistic and comprehensive approach in tackling trafficking in persons on regional level, we succeeded to gatherall responsible regional actors for the dialogue around one table, among them officials investigating, prosecuting, and adjudicating trafficking in persons cases, on one hand, and specialists raising awareness and rendering services for victims of such crimes, on the other hand”, stated Dr. Reda Sirgediene, UNODC Regional Adviser on Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants for Central Asia.

Some 38 regional specialists of the regional departments of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs, Regional Prosecutor's Office, Regional Court, Navoiy Khokimyat, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations, Ministry for Support of Mahalla and Family, Youth Agency, and civil society organizations improved their knowledge on detection and investigation of trafficking in persons crimes, identification and referral of and assistance for trafficking in persons victims, as well as on development of multidisciplinary and multisectoral cooperation.

“It was a great pleasure and honor to support the practitioners of Navoiy region to deepen their knowledge and capacity to combat trafficking in persons crimes. Specially designed practical exercises, role plays, and case studies helped practitioners enhance their investigation skills”, Dr. Reda Sirgediene concluded. 

“Practicality and comprehensiveness of training sessions, interactive exercises and case reviews provided rewarding experience for the participants”, noted in his speech Mr. Said Saidazimov Pazliddinovich, Representative of the Sub-Commission for Combating Trafficking in Persons, Officer of the Department for Countering Trafficking in Persons and Illegal Migration of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The trained practitioners with the acquired knowledge and strengthened skills will deliver cascaded training to colleagues in their respective organizations.

As the guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and its complementary Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, UNODC supports the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan in strengthening its efforts to combat trafficking in persons.

The ToT seminars are aimed at developing the same level of knowledge of responsible practitioners in all regions of Uzbekistan and are implemented under the financial support of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
