UNODC-WCO Container Control Programme delivers remote mentoring programmes in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan

UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia organized a series of remote mentoring programmes under the UNODC-Word Customs Organizations (WCO) Global Container Control Programme (CCP): on 16-17 February 2021 for the Port Control Units (PCU) composed of the officers of the Customs Service under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Drug Control Agency under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan in “Dushanbe-2” and “Nizhniy Pyanj” Customs posts in Tajikistan; and on 16-18 February 2021 for PCUs composed of the officers from the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan in “Alat”, “Chukursay Tekhkontora” and “Yallama” Customs posts in Uzbekistan.

During the opening of the mentoring, Mr. Batyr Geldiyev, UNODC Regional Programme Coordinator stated that these mentorships are organized: to warrant sustainability of the programme, ensure that PCUs are functioning well, provide some advice in their real work environment and to ensure that officials who become newly part of unit are being adequately trained and have the same level of skills as their colleagues.

Remote mentoring programme in Uzbekistan

The mentoring programmes were led by an experienced WCO trainer-mentors, who have shared with PCU members their experience and best practices on the latest developments in drugs/precursors production and trafficking, modus operandi "rip-on", "rip-off" trafficking cases, the latest and sophisticated concealment methods, usage of open source information and secure communication system ContainerCOMM. The event also covered online presentations of various practical cases on different types of smuggling via container, railroad/truck transport. The PCU members also had an opportunity to seek expert`s advice on PCU operations, discuss current challenges as well as share information on latest seizure cases made by them.

The CCP Regional Segment for Central Asia is funded by the Government of Japan and the U.S. Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), and the Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Programme.
