Youth run Model UN conference in Ferghana Valley and learn new skills for social cohesion

The first ever MUN conference in Fergana Valley was held at Yoshlar Markazi in Andijan on the 12th-13th June, 2021 under the title Fergana Valley Model United Nations (FVMUN). Over 400 students and teachers from across all over Uzbekistan registered for the conference. 150 students were selected to take part in the conference which spanned over the 2 days. 

On 12 June, the FVMUN conference which began with an opening ceremony during which Ms. Ashita Mittal, UNODC Regional Representative to Central Asia, Mr. Alisher Sadullaev, Director of Youth Affairs Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan, H.E. Mr. Manish Prabhat, the Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan, Mr. Oybek Yuldashev, Head of the Department of the Youth Affairs Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Andijan region and Ms. Gulnar Kudaybergenova, UNODC National Project Officer addressed the delegates of the FVMUN Conference.

After the introductions and opening remarks, the MUN sessions and debates kicked off and provided a unique platform for these young delegates to develop their public speaking, critical thinking and negotiation skills, as well as develop the understanding of how United Nations and diplomacy works.

On the second day, the debates and discussions intensified and provided an exhilarating atmosphere for all the delegates to take part in resolution-making to solve the problems of their committees.

The day ended with social events providing a unique platform for inter-city networking followed by the closing ceremony where awards, certificates and nominations were presented to the delegates and DAIS members with some cultural performances from the youth of Andjian.

Two days were full of debates, negotiations and networking - and most importantly learning to cooperate for the common goal, which is critical for building social harmony and uniting young people. The majority of the participants came from Ferghana, Andijan, Namangan regions and Tashkent, but there were also representatives of Samarkand, Bukhara, Nukus, Syrdarya, Jizzakh and Navoi regions.

The first MUN held in Ferghana Valley can serve a unique platform for young people from that region to learn important skills that can be exercised in their daily lives and which can make them champions of peace and security as well as social harmony in the region. This conference was organized by UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia (UNODC ROCA) in cooperation with the Youth Affairs Agency of Uzbekistan within UN Joint project (UNDP-UNODC-UNESCO) funded by UN Peacebuilding to promote “Youth for social harmony in Ferghana Valley”.
