Legal practitioners and law enforcement personnel in the Kyrgyz Republic are empowered to investigate and prosecute Trafficking in Persons crimes

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is constantly providing learning opportunities and taking a proactive step to equip judges, prosecutors, police officers and lawyers with the tools they need to combat trafficking in persons crimes, through arrangement of the interagency training sessions in partnership with the Winrock International. The training sessions are planned in Bishkek on 7-8 September 2023 and in Osh on 28-29 September 2023.

The training courses aim to address the challenges associated with the investigation, supervision, and prosecution of human trafficking crimes. The curriculum of the training covers essential topics such as local and international legislation, different forms of trafficking in persons, problems of law enforcement practice and issues of identification, interaction between the internal affairs departments and the prosecutor's offices, peculiarities of legal proceedings in human trafficking cases, guidelines for sentencing in human trafficking cases. This will allow participants to learn specifics of efficient cooperation during investigation and prosecution of crimes related to trafficking in persons.

UNODC's engagement aligns with its role as the guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children.

“By partnering with the Kyrgyz Republic's government, civil society and international organizations, UNODC is committed to enhancing the criminal justice response to trafficking in persons, while prioritizing victim-centered investigations and prosecutions.  Our focus is on equipping law enforcement personnel and legal practitioners with the skills and knowledge needed to address this critical challenge and ensure the safety and dignity of all individuals” – said Koen Marquering, UNODC International Programme Manager.

The event is organized within the framework of the project supported by the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (JTIP) at the United States Department of State. The project aims to institutionalize victim-centered investigations and prosecutions of trafficking in persons cases while ensuring necessary assistance to trafficking in persons victims in the Kyrgyz Republic. The project also addresses the need to operationalize the National Referral Mechanism for trafficking in persons victims in the Kyrgyz Republic and contributes to the expansion of comprehensive services for victims of trafficking.
