Evaluating impact: experts gather in Vienna to discuss UNODC's 'Line Up Live Up' life skills training curriculum
26 May 2017 - Experts on crime and drug-use prevention, sports and development, as well as evaluation and monitoring, gathered in Vienna at the end of May to review the results of UNODC's sports-based life skills training curriculum currently being developed under the Doha Declaration Global Programme. With the gathering of key people from within this area, the meeting allowed for an in-depth exchange of views on the development of the impact evaluation tools and to discuss opportunities for linking the life skills training to other support services for youth in marginalized communities. Experts praised the work done so far and welcomed the opportunity that the Global Programme offers to gather much needed data on how sports can help bring down violence, crime and drug use.
With a view to establishing the indicators and data collection tools, experts reviewed the theory of change designed for the initiative. In this context, the benefits of working with partners to complement the curriculum - Line Up Live Up - with non-formal education and youth empowerment interventions, as well as sport inspired awareness raising and community mobilization actions were highlighted.
In parallel to the Expert Meeting a sports demonstration of the curriculum was organized in the United Nations Plaza by UNODC in cooperation with the FIFA Grassroots Programme, the NGO Grassroot Soccer South Africa, and the First Vienna Football Club youth team. Held at the same time as the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the demonstration presented a unique opportunity to showcase the use of sports for youth crime and drug use prevention.
