CARICC organizes a side event on the margins of the 65th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs

On 15 March, the Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Centre for Combating Illicit Trafficking of Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and their Precursors (CARICC) organized an online side event “The role of CARICC in combatting drug trafficking, transnational organized crime and associated terrorism at regional and interregional levels with particular focus on the northern route” on the margins of the 65th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs.

The event brought together high-ranking officials from law enforcement agencies and international organizations - UNODC, OSCE, CSTO, RATS SCO, CIS ATC, the EAG Secretariat, and others.

Major General of Police Rustam Miralizoda, Director of CARICC, noted in his opening speech that the political and military environment in Afghanistan had changed, affecting the situation not only in the region but also around the world. In this regard, he pointed out the extreme importance of special attention from the international community to the problem of drug trafficking, including its solution by increasing donor assistance to combat drugs.

Ms. Ashita Mittal, UNODC Regional Representative for Central Asia, emphasized the importance of CARICC as an essential platform that brings together the countries of the region and their partners in countering the dangers of narcotic drugs, and it is a platform that will be needed now more than ever. Ms. Mittal reiterated UNODC’s commitment to providing further support to CARICC. 

Mr. Azizbek Erkaboev, Head of Information and Analytical Unit of CARICC, presented the information on the main activities of the Centre and the proposed initiatives.

At the end of the event, the participants discussed the measures for further expanding and strengthening cooperation with CARICC.
