Nigeria continues to face profound challenges posed by terrorism, most notably, as a result of the activities of terrorist organization Boko Haram and its affiliates in the Northeast. Against this backdrop, UNODC is implementing a four-year (2020-2024) “Project to Strengthen the Capacity of Nigeria to Collect Evidence and More Effectively Prosecute Terrorism and Other Serious Crimes with Respect for the Rule of Law”, funded by the United States Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
The project aims to support Nigeria to successfully prosecute terrorism and serious crime committed in Nigeria’s Northeast (Borno, Adamawa, Yobe and Gombe states) through improved collection and utilization of potential evidential material in cases brought before the Federal and state courts. By emphasizing the importance of corroborating evidence to ensure fairness in the dispensation of justice, the project responds to a practical gap in the Nigerian criminal justice system.
UNODC’s support includes:
To date, the project has trained over 1,250 criminal justice officials in more than 75 capacity building activities.
