Over the past decade, law enforcement in the North East of Nigeria have faced significant challenges, adversely affecting community well-being and compromising overall safety and security. To meet this need, the United States Government is providing support to Nigeria to develop a pilot Transitional Police Unit (TPU) – now called Special Intervention Squad (SIS) – with Nigeria Police Force officers and support personnel. Through a five-year “Project to Support the INL-funded Deployment of the Transitional Police Unit in North East Nigeria”, funded by the United States Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), UNODC is providing equipment and mentoring for TPU officers. The mentoring will focus on evidence collection, investigative skills, human rights and gender dimensions of policing. The establishment of the TPU represents a significant step towards enhancing security and restoring stability in Nigeria's North East.
