The 'Support to Anti-Corruption in Nigeria' project financed by the European Union under the 10 th European Development Fund and implemented by UNODC in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) commenced in November 2012 and ended in August 2017. The project addressed all thematic areas covered under the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), including prevention, law enforcement, international cooperation and asset recovery.
More specifically, under this project, UNODC provided support to 14 government agencies with a view to enhancing their operational capacity as well as improving inter-agency coordination. Support included the provision of equipment to agencies to fulfill their mandate and the implementation of an extensive training programme, including through mentoring. Support was provided in areas such as asset declaration, prevention, procurement, access to legal information, investigation and prosecution, and international cooperation.
In the area of public awareness, the project supported government institutions, the media and civil society organisations (CSOs) with a view to enhancing the public's understanding of corruption and its negative impacts on the daily lives of citizens and hereby gradually increase rejection and public condemnation of corrupt practices. Extensive support went to radio programmes, providing airtime to government institutions and CSOs on a weekly basis to up to 80 million listeners. Through a grant portfolio, the project supported ten CSOs, with a large geographical coverage and a varied scope of intervention areas. Furthermore, the project increased dialogue between the civil society and government entities on several issues, including asset recovery, public procurement, as well as several anti-corruption bills under consideration during the life-span of the project
