Support and Capacity Building to NAPTIP on Strengthening Access to Justice and Victim Support (2015 - 2017)
The Support and Capacity Building to NAPTIP on Strengthening Access to Justice and Victim Support project supported by the Government of Switzerland and implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) commenced in June 2015 and ended in December 2017. The overall goal of the project was to improve the organizational, operational and management capacities of law enforcement officers, counsellors and social workers to deal with cases of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants in Nigeria, in particular in the fields of access to justice and victim support.
The project complemented the larger project 'Promoting Better Management of Migration in Nigeria by Combating and Reducing Irregular Migration that occurs, inter alia, through TIP and SOM'. Main results achieved by the project included:
- Sustained support for comprehensive rehabilitation, empowerment, care and support provided to 60 victims (instead of 36 victims as initially planned)
- Increased capacity of 90 counsellors and social workers from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Network of Civil Society Organizations Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL) (instead of 65 initially planned) to provide professional victim care and support
- The new training curriculum 'Basic Social work counselling skills for the management of trafficked persons in Nigeria'
- The National Referral Mechanism for Protection and Assistance to Trafficked Persons in Nigeria (NRM) comprised of 35 specialized agencies (state and non-state actors) from Lagos and Edo states tasked with providing access to justice for trafficked victims
