Advancing Justice in Montenegro: An Integrated Strategy for Financial Investigations and Victim Compensation in Human Trafficking Cases 

12 - 14December 2023, Budva, Montenegro: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS) joined forces with Montenegro in implementing a comprehensive strategy aiming to fight human trafficking in South Eastern Europe.

At a recent national workshop in Budva, organised in partnership with the Center for Education in Judiciary and State Prosecution of Montenegro, representatives from various authorities involved in the prevention, detection, investigation, prosecution and adjudication of human trafficking cases and conducting financial investigations came together to focus on asset confiscation as not only an effective deterrent strategy for combat trafficking in persons but also a very important tool in restoring justice and providing essential support to victims of this heinous crime.

During the three-day event, 16 professionals coming from Supreme Court of Montenegro, Higher Court in Bijelo Polje, Higher State Prosecutor’s Offices in Podgorica and Bijelo Polje, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior and Police Directorate were discussed topics related to financial investigations and victim compensation in human trafficking cases.

The workshop was conducted under the project: UN.Locking Impunity of Traffickers and Supporting Justice for Victims of Trafficking in Persons in Southeastern Europe, funded by the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, Department of State of the United States of America.

This activity contributes to SDG 16, particularly Target 16.2 to end abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children.
