Hargeisa Prison, Somalia.

Mandela Rule 21

"Every prisoner shall, in accordance with local or national standards, be provided with a separate bed and with separate and sufficient bedding which shall be clean when issued, kept in good order and changed often enough to ensure its cleanliness."

Hargeisa Prison has a capacity of 500 inmates. Before the mattresses were procured, UNODC had already delivered 500 beds. During the last couple of months, UNODC has procured 500 mattresses (200+300) to be put on those beds. Before this procurement, inmates slept on very thin blankets. In the worst case scenario, some inmates had no blankets or mattress at all. The blankets that they used were brought by the inmates themselves when they arrived or were delivered by their families during visits.

The procured mattresses and the bedding went through extensive testing by UNODC staff to make sure that the quality meets international standards. The material is long lasting, is fire proof and easy to clean.

The mattresses are put in every bed and each inmate that is admitted in to the prison is provided with clean bedding. Throughout their sentence, the inmate must clean their own bedding frequently.
