UNODC ROEA ORGANIZES A BILATERAL CONSULTATIVE MEETING ON COUNTERING TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS BETWEEN KENYA AND UGANDA

28 - 29 March 2019 - Naivasha: UNODC Regional Office for Eastern Africa under the framework of the Better Migration Management Programme, brought together the Uganda Task Force on Trafficking in Persons and the Counter Trafficking in Persons Advisory Committee of Kenya. The two-day meeting that was held on 28 and 29 March 2019 discussed matters of common interest in addressing countering of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants between the two countries.

The main objective of the meeting was to promote bilateral cooperation between Uganda and Kenya in matters of countering human trafficking and migrant smuggling. This initiative aims at enhancing a coordinated cross-border response to these crimes in the region.

The two-day engagement was preceded by a presentation by UNODC on the General Situation and Trends on human trafficking and migrant smuggling in Eastern Africa. It entailed sharing of information and experiences between the two countries in the field of these crimes including, but not limited to, the countries' respective legal framework, the roles of the two task forces in their respective countries, the respective national referral mechanisms, Identification of Areas of Synergy and common Interest between Kenya and Uganda.

After close deliberations, both parties have identified new ways of formal and informal actions to enhance bilateral cooperation to counter these horrendous crimes.
