November 2015 – Republic of Korea: Three weeks of international joint operation led to seizures of 8.8 tons of illicit drugs, including 1.1 tons of NPS

SEOUL, Republic of Korea - November 2015. The World Customs Organization (WCO) under the lead of Korea Customs Service (KCS), and in collaboration with 94 national customs agencies and several international organizations including UNODC, INCB, INTERPOL and EUROPOL, concluded a time-bound global interdiction effort known as Operation CATalyst, which targeted new psychoactive substances (NPS).

During the three week operation, participating countries seized 1.1 tons of NPS including synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic cathinones, ketamine and phencyclidine-type substances, phenethylamines, plant-based substances plus several tons of other illicit drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine. NPS that were seized included 2-FMA, 4-CMC, 5-Meo-DALT alpha-PVP, Etizolam, Ketamine, Khat, MDPV, STS-135, THJ-2201. The Operation was first of its kind conducted at the global level.
