UN and Brazil sign a new Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023-2027

Brasília, 1 August 2023 - The United Nations and today the Brazilian government signed, today, the New UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2023-2027, as part of the visit of UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed to the country. The document will guide the Brazil-UN partnership until 2027. It is the main document for planning, implementing, and monitoring the UN System actions in the country.

The UNSDCF was based on the Multiannual Plan and the Federal Development Strategy 2020-2031, enabling the UN system's contribution in Brazil to be complementary and in line with the national efforts on the country's main development issues.

For the new Framework, a set of five strategic thematic areas were identified:

1. Economic Transformation for Sustainable Development

2. Social Inclusion for Sustainable Development

3. Environment and Climate Change for Sustainable Development

4. Governance and Institutional Capacities

5. Linking Humanitarian Action and Sustainable Development

UNODC Office in Brazil was nominated by the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Brazil as co-leading agency of the UNSDCF Pillar “Governance and Democratic Institutions”, jointly with UNDP, and worked side-by-side with national stakeholders and UN entities on the new Framework for the last two years.

A total of 165 representatives of 18 institutions from the three branches of government and representatives from all the agencies, funds, and programmes of the UN System in Brazil took part in the drafting of the UNSDCF. 

Civil society participated throughout the process. The Participa+Brasil platform and the @ONU Brasil social media profiles received engagement from more than 21 thousand people.

The document was signed by the Resident Coordinator of the UN System in Brazil, Silvia Rucks, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, with the UN Deputy Leader and the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Márcio Macêdo, as witnesses.

Agenda 2030 - Minister Mauro Vieira and Amina Mohammed also met to discuss Agenda 2030 in Brazil, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the reform of international financial institutions and South-South cooperation provided by Brazil.

Both took part in the event "Accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals: the 2030 Agenda in Brazil", at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia, which was also attended by Minister Márcio Macêdo and the Secretary for International Affairs and Development at the Ministry of Planning and Budget, Renata Amaral.
