UNODC support prison reform in Panama
Under the project "Supporting the prison reform in the Republic of Panama", UNODC and the Ministry of Government organized a regional workshop on prison reform and mechanisms to reduce overcrowding.
The workshop was held on 18 and 19 November in Panama City and was attended by 30 officials of the Ministry of Government, Prison System, Public Prosecutor, Judicial Branch, Office of the Ombudsman and civil society representatives.
International experts from Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico and Costa Rica, participated of the event, as well as the Director of the United Nations Institute for Crime Prevention and treatment of offenders. (ILANUD).
During the workshop, the penitentiary situation in Panama was analyzed and experiences and best practices in the region were shared.
The participants prioritized the main components for a sustainable and effective prison reform.
