Regional workshop on "Preventing and Combating Emerging Cyber Crimes"

A regional training workshop for law enforcement officers and prosecutors on preventing and combating emerging cyber-crimes took place in Tehran on 28-29 November 2017.
The training, jointly organized by Sub-programme 2 of the Regional Programme for Afghanistan and Neighbouring Countries and the Cyber Police of the Islamic Republic of Iran, focused on new investigative techniques through social media, collection, preservation and judicial value of electronic evidence and the importance of the role of the private sector, including internet service providers, in fighting cybercrime. Furthermore, participants coincided on the need to strengthen cooperation at regional and international level and to facilitate the exchange of related information.
More than 30 officials attended the event, including participants from the I.R. Afghanistan, I.R. Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, I.R. Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Representatives from the Danish, Italian, French, Japanese and Russian Embassies also attended the event.
During the meeting, many different issues were discussed including child explotation, the spreading of violent extremism, bank frauds, identity thefts, investigation on social media and the importance to respect established protocols when collecting digital evidences. Trainers from UNODC, the National High Tech Crime Unit of the Dutch Police, the Italian Police Academy and the Spanish Police contributed to the implementation of the training, which gave an opportunity for the participants to acquire hands-on knowledge on highly complex subjects but also to share national experiences and challenges regarding the fight against emerging cyber-crimes.
Furthermore, the training represented an invaluable occasion to discuss future cooperation among the participating countries both at the regional and international levels. In this regard, towards the end of the workshop, an informal regional experts working group was established aimed at strengthening regional cooperation, facilitate the exchange of information and increase trust among the practitioners.
