Drug Laws/Individual Listing
Notification, 21st June 2011. Amendment to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act (1985)
2011

In 2011, ketamine was included in the list of psychotropic substances contained in the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), 1985 (61 of 1985), controlling the manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, use as well as import and export. However, the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 and those of the D&C Act, 1940 under which controls of ketamine had been taken continue to apply. The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act (1985) includes narcotic drugs (all substances under the Single Convention), psychotropic substances (all substances under the 1971 Convention and ketamine) and precursor chemicals defined as “controlled substances” (most of the substances mentioned under Tables I and II of the 1988 Convention. In February 2015, mephedrone was placed under control and included in the Schedule to the NDPS in India (http://cbn.nic.in/html/Mephedrone.pdf).
