Early Warning Mechanisms for NEW ZEALAND

Early Warning Mechanisms
Drug Information and Alerts Aotearoa New Zealand (DIANZ)
n/a

The Drug Information and Alerts Aotearoa New Zealand (DIANZ) is the national drug early warning system of New Zealand. Launched in 2020, it is located within the National Drug Intelligence Bureau (NDIB) and responsible for gathering and analysing relevant information to determine the need for a drug harm alert, and disseminating alerts appropriately.

DIANZ is a joint agency made up of representatives from the New Zealand Ministry of Health, New Zealand Customs Service and the New Zealand Police and can be accessed via the High Alert website. DIANZ is supported by a network of health professionals and social services (both Government and Non-Government Organisations), including: New Zealand Drug Foundation, KnowYourStuffNZ, St John New Zealand, Wellington Free Ambulance and the Institute of Environmental Science and Research.

A range of anonymised information sources provide input to DIANZ, including from NDIB, network partners, street sample testing and public reporting. Information gathered is put through a standardised analysis process that determines the risk level and action to be taken. If a high-risk situation exists, an alert is published on the High Alert website.  Lower risk situations may result in a notification.
