7-hydroxymitragynine is not present in fresh kratom leaves but is an artifact of the drying process; it is also formed by oxidation of mitragynine by hepatic and intestinal cytochromes. There is emerging evidence of products sold with 7-hydroxymitragynine as the main ingredient or mixed with mitragynine pseudoindoxyl.
