April 2013 - United States of America: Drug in ‘bath salts’ caused teen’s overdose death

UNITED STATES, Orlando – 5 April 2013. The death of a 17-year-old teenager who died of a drug overdose in February has been linked to an NPS. Orange County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia concluded the "mystery" substance that killed the teen in February was a drug used in ‘bath salts’. Based on the residue found on the bill that a group of teens were using to snort the substance, she concluded that the victim and the other teens were using the substance known as 2,5-Dimethoxy-N-(2-Methoxybenzyl), a phenethylamine derivative (NBOMe). Three other teens were hospitalized as a result of the overdose and were later released.
