March 2013 - France: seizures of khat on a par with cocaine

FRANCE – 19 March 2013. The plant-based substance Khat is a controlled drug in France, however, this has not prevented its widespread circulation in illicit drug markets. In 2012 seizures of khat increased to 4.5 tons (from 1.8 tons in 2011), putting in on a par with cocaine seizures (4.6 tons), according to French Customs. This February alone one ton was seized. Last year most of the consignments seized were destined for the United States and Canada. However, some khat is destined for consumption in France.
