Countries

The Youth Crime Prevention through Sport initiative is active in multiple countries across the world. Together with partners at national and local levels, the initiative promotes the use of sport to strengthen life skills, build youth resilience and enhance empowerment and participation, provides safe public spaces through refurbishment work, supports civil society actors, and organizes policy and awareness-raising events on the effective use of sport for crime and violence prevention.

 

Headquarters

The Youth Crime Prevention through Sport team at UNODC’s Headquarters in Vienna is responsible for the conceptualization and coordination of activities under the initiative, including developing technical guidance materials and tools, and supporting the design and implementation of programme activities in beneficiary countries around the world.

Preventing violent extremism through sport

Brazil

UNODC implements Line Up Live Up in sport settings in cooperation with several partners, including the Secretariat of Sports and Leisure, the Municipal Secretariat of Sports in Rio de Janeiro, the Public Safety and Sports Secretariats of the Federal District, and the Social Department of the Brazilian Football Confederation. The initiative also provides grants as a way of supporting NGOs who engage youth through the use of sport in their communities.

Colombia

Peru

UNODC implements Line Up Live Up in community settings in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior (through the Barrio Seguro Strategy), the Municipality of Victoria, and the Peru National Sport Institute. Awareness-raising and policy events are also part of the work in the country.

UNODC implements Line Up Live Up in juvenile detention facilities and in community settings in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Public Health. Refurbishment of sport facilities was also conducted, providing youth with access to safe public spaces.

UNODC implements Line Up Live Up in schools and community settings in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the Higher Council of Youth and Sports, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). National awareness-raising campaigns and policy events on the use of sport for youth crime prevention are a key area of work. The initiative also supports NGOs who engage youth through the use of sport in their communities.

The initiative also provides grants as a way to support NGOs in implementing sport-based interventions to build youth and community resilience to violence and crime.

Mexico

The Youth Crime Prevention through Sport initiative organized a series of online workshops in Mexico on preventing youth crime during the COVID-19 pandemic, and is planning implementation of the Line Up Live Up programme.

Honduras

Honduras attended the Line Up Live Up Global Event in 2019. Honduran Olympic medallist, Ana Joselina Fortín, became a Rule of Law Champion, showcasing the value of sport in her in life. Watch video

Kenya

The Youth Crime Prevention through Sport initiative organized policy and awareness-raising events on the use of sport to reduce youth crime and violence.

Balkan region

The Youth Crime Prevention through Sport initiative provided a Line Up Live Up training of trainers for coaches in Albania, Bosnia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia, in partnership with the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
