UNODC Country Representative met with the Head of Iranian Anti Narcotic Police

   

Tehran, 05 October 2023 – The Country Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Iran, Mr. Alexander Fedulov, had an official meeting with Brigadier General Iraj Kakavand, the Head of the Anti-Narcotic Police (ANP) of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in which both parties reviewed the activities under implementation, and discussed the perspective of future cooperation.

In this bilateral meeting, Brigadier General Kakavand referred to the occasion of this meeting, being on the first day of Police Week of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and by mentioning numerous efforts and achievements of the dedicated Iranian ANP Officers, reiterated the seriousness and decisiveness of the Islamic Republic of Iran in fight against drugs, and also mentioned that Islamic Republic of Iran has borne remarkable financial and human recourses costs in combating the menace of drugs and number of Iranian ANP martyrs verifies this claim.

Brigadier General Kakavand also expressed his concerns about the significant increase in production of Methamphetamine in Afghanistan, as an emerging global threat, and highlighted the critical position of Iran as a major transit country, neighboring Afghanistan. He reemphasized on the need for global support to contain this problem.

UNODC Iran Country Representative in his remarks, while expressing his appreciation for the efforts of the Iranian ANP in fight against drugs, stated that through years UNODC Iran has been supporting the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran in their drug control activities, through various programme-based activities and approaches. Mr. Alexander Fedulov announced about the upcoming handover with the presence of Ambassador of Japan and provided update on procurement of Drug Identification Devices, Drug Detecting Dogs, Medical Requirements of Anti-Narcotics Police Canine Center, and also Canine Trailers and Accessories for the Iranian Law Enforcement drug detecting dogs.

Mr. Fedulov reiterated the readiness of UNODC for provision of technical and procurement supports to the Iranian ANP. He expressed that he is highly aware of the requirements and will definitely follow-up on them upon availability of funds and supports from donor countries.
