SANTIAGO, Chile – September 2015. Government authorities intercepted 4,930 doses of PMMA (para-Methoxymethamphetamine) and 4,810 doses of MDMA (3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine), in April this year. MDMA is a substance under international control and PMMA is under national control in Chile, after having been included in the list of controlled substances in March 2015. The drugs, with an estimated street value of 274,500 USD, were concealed in two parcels from Spain and bound for Valparaiso (Chile). This is the first seizure of PMMA reported in Chile. Pills sold as “ecstasy” that contain PMMA instead of MDMA (the original chemical found in pills sold as ecstasy) have been identified in some European countries (e.g. the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom) and linked to serious adverse health effects.
