On 15 November, Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA), an international network of legislators committed to promoting peace, security, and human rights, convened an event in Yaoundé, Cameroon to foster dialogue and action to address nuclear security concerns.
The event, with the cooperation of National Assembly of Cameroon and in partnership with Canada, focused on enhancing nuclear security measures in the pursuit of global peace. Mr Peter Barcroft, Senior Director of the International Peace and Security Program, introduced the International Peace and Security Program of PGA, which is recognized for its efforts in advocating disarmament and fostering cooperation among lawmakers globally. He further emphasized the urgent need to address the risks associated with a lack of legal framework in Cameroon to address nuclear security.
During the session, discussions revolved around the perils posed by nuclear terrorism, and terrorists and other criminals seeking safe haven in jurisdictions without a legal framework to address these dangerous acts, highlighting their potential catastrophic consequences on humanity and the environment. The alarming risks of proliferation and illicit trafficking of and terrorism involving nuclear and other radioactive material underscored the pressing need for robust international frameworks to ensure effective nuclear security.
UNODC, through the funding of Canada, presented virtually on the importance of adhering to and implementing the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) as a crucial step toward mitigating these threats. UNODC highlighted the Convention's provisions aimed at fostering international cooperation among States parties in preventing, responding to, prosecuting or extraditing those involved in acts of nuclear terrorism, contributing to global efforts to ensure nuclear security.
UNODC also stressed the crucial role ICSANT plays in fostering international cooperation. Its universal adherence and effective implementation are essential in facilitating information exchange on nuclear security threats and enabling the prosecution and extradition of suspected offenders, contributing significantly to global peace and security.
The event concluded with a call to action by PGA, urging Cameroon to prioritize nuclear security measures through adherence to ICSANT.
