UN Joint Global Programme calls for coordinated, multi-sectoral responses to gender-based violence
The persistence and prevalence of gender-based violence is a problem of pandemic proportions. An estimated 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner at some point in their lives. With a view to countering this problem, UNODC, UN Women, UNFPA, UNDP and WHO organized a side event at the 27th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. [Read More]
Tackling corruption 'from the top down' essential, declares UN chief, marking key global treaty
Corruption and complicity know no geographical boundaries, and it is society's most vulnerable who get hurt the most, senior United Nations officials said, calling on Government leaders to fight the scourge, from the top down. Event to mark 15th anniversary of the UN Convention against Corruption highlights links to peace and security, sustainable development

Last year's record opium production in Afghanistan threatens sustainable development, latest survey reveals
In 2017, opium cultivation in Afghanistan reached a record high with an estimated 328,000 hectares, up 63 per cent compared with 201,000 hectares in 2016. According to the latest survey report released by UNODC, last year's record levels of production has led to unprecedented levels of potential heroin production. From the 2017 opium harvest, some 550-900 tons of heroin of export quality can be produced.[Read More]
Myanmar holds high level negotiations with Mekong countries and UNODC to address deteriorating drug situation
Senior drug policy leaders from the Mekong region met in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar with the UNODC for a conference of the Mekong MOU on Drug Control to discuss the illicit drug situation in the region. The conference brought together the leadership of Mekong drug authorities and over 100 senior delegates and experts to consider the latest data, and for detailed discussions on drug law enforcement, justice, health and alternative development strategies and programmes. A New Tool in Support of Sustaining Peace and Development: Practitioner's Toolkit on Women's Access to Justice Programming
Women's access to justice received critical attention as an important pathway for achieving gender equality and women's empowerment at the High-Level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace at the earlier sixty-second session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW'62). UNODC launches counter-extremism network for Central Asia region
The Central Asian Network for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism is now live at www.capve.org. Designed by UNODC's Terrorism Prevention Branch and Regional Office for Central Asia, the website serves as a resource tool for policymakers and professionals working against violent extremism. The site is hosted by the Academy of Law Enforcement Agencies under the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan. [Read More]
UNODC empowers African civil society organizations to fight corruption
May the 11th marked the closure of a four-day multi-stakeholder workshop in Senegal on the United Nations Convention against Corruption and its Review Mechanism. The event, organized by UNODC in partnership with the UNCAC Coalition and support of the Austrian Development Agency, trained some 50 civil society and government representatives from 15 African countries on the implementation of the Convention.[Read More]
UNODC, Thailand hold ASEAN integration and border security dialogue in Bangkok
Amid changing transnational organized crime and security threats, UNODC and the Government of Thailand organized a high-level conference on border management and security across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations region. 200 participants, representing ASEAN Member States, development banks and the United Nations, gathered in Bangkok as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister of Thailand, Prajin Juntong, opened the conference.[Read more]
