UNODC Regional Representative for Central Asia Meets Director of the Executive Committee of RATS SCO to Discuss the Prospects of Further Cooperation

21 January 2019, Tashkent - UNODC Regional Representative for Central Asia, Ms. Ashita Mittal met the Director of the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Mr. Jumakhon Giyosov.

Ms. Mittal and Mr. Giyosov discussed the cooperation between UNODC ROCA and RATS SCO within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2011 and expressed commitments to further enhance partnership between organizations, to contribute to the strengthening of security and sustainable development in the region. Among issues of common concern - preventing and countering terrorism and violent extremism, drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.

UNODC Regional Representative for Central Asia provided brief information on current activities in the field of preventing terrorism in the region, including the establishment of Regional Network on Preventing Violent Extremism; the "Education for Justice" programme for preventing crime and promoting a culture of lawfulness through educational activities; increasing awareness and understanding on prevention of, and justice responses to violence against children recruited and exploited by terrorist and violent extremist groups; capacity building on prevention of radicalization to violence in prisons.

Ms. Mittal and Mr. Giyosov agreed to advance the partnership between UNODC ROCA and RATS SCO to a new level and establish a working plan of joint activities for coming years.
