UNODC supports the development of the National Action Plan of Turkmenistan to counter trafficking in persons for 2023-2025.

On 24 March 2023, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) held a working meeting of the National Working Group on countering trafficking in persons in Turkmenistan to discuss the key outcomes of the National Action Plan of Turkmenistan on countering Trafficking in Persons 2020-2022 and launched the process of the development of the new National Action Plan of Turkmenistan on countering trafficking in persons for 2023-2025.

The event brought together the key stakeholders from the public sector, international development partners and civil society organizations, including representatives of the Parliament, the Prosecutor General's Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Migration Service, the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population, the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, the Office of the Ombudsman, the Institute of State, Democracy and Law of Turkmenistan to review the achievements and outcomes under the National Action Plan of Turkmenistan to Counter Trafficking in Persons 2020-2022, as well as to discuss and identify the key objectives and priorities for the National Action Plan of Turkmenistan to counter trafficking in persons for 2023-2025.  

During the meeting, the National Working Group on countering trafficking in persons discussed such matters as the role and responsibilities of the coordinator of the National Working Group on Countering Trafficking in Persons and its composition; the format of the document, the timeline of activities and the sources of funding to implement the activities under the National Action Plan of Turkmenistan on countering trafficking in persons for 2023-2025. It was agreed that the next meeting of the National Working Group on Countering Trafficking in Persons will be held in April to discuss the first draft of the National Action Plan of Turkmenistan to counter trafficking in persons for 2023-2025.

Turkmenistan joined the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime in 2005 and consequently has been improving the state policies and legislation to ensure proper prevention, detection, and suppression of trafficking in persons, as well as creating conditions to protect and ensure the rights of victims of trafficking.

The National Action Plan of Turkmenistan to counter trafficking in persons for 2023-2025 is a joint plan of action aimed at consolidating the efforts of the government bodies, civil society and international organizations to ensure a comprehensive approach to addressing trafficking in persons.
