Bangkok (Thailand), 9 December 2012 - International Anti-Corruption Day falls on Sunday 9 December. On this day, the international community will come together to celebrate the significant strides that have been made against corruption in the past year; and to demonstrate unity for the fight to come.
This year,
United Nations partners in East Asia and the Pacific, as well as governments and non-governmental entities have organized a series of events to celebrate International Anti-Corruption Day across this vast region of ours, home to nearly 30% of the world's population.

Brunei, Cambodia, Lao, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Viet Nam and Marshall Island are but a few of the countries that will host events this International Anti-Corruption Day. Such an array of participants represents just how much has been achieved in the past year; although if the fight against corruption is to be successful, much more needs to be done - every day of the year.
Corruption disproportionately harms the poor, stifles economic growth and diverts desperately needed funds from education, healthcare and other public services. If any headway into the problem is to be made, the support of the community as a whole is required. Political will and institutional capacity can often be lacking, and effective prevention and detection of corruption can only be achieved through a whole-of-government and society approach.
