Suva (Fiji), 21 July 2023 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the National Youth Council (NYC) of Fiji have partnered to co-organize an enlightening one-day workshop on the role of youth in the Pacific unity against corruption, with various youth groups from the Fiji Central region on 13 July at the Theological College in Suva. The workshop brought together young leaders, activists, and advocates who are dedicated to creating positive change in Fiji's society.

The workshop aimed to deepen the participants’ understanding of integrity, anti-corruption measures, Fijian ethical values, the Teieniwa vision, and the significance of UNCAC (United Nations Convention against Corruption) in promoting good governance. It featured lively discussions and interactive sessions addressing pressing issues related to anti-corruption in Fiji. Topics included the impact of corruption on social and economic development, the role of youth in combating corruption, and strategies to promote transparency and accountability. The workshop encouraged participants to identify innovative solutions to effectively combat corruption.

To capture the essence of the workshop's kick off, one can turn to the inspiring words of Vasiti Tabucakau from the Tailevu Provincial Youth Council stated, "As Pacific Islanders, we are survivors, no matter what the world throws at us, we survive." By leveraging the diverse perspectives and expertise of the attendees, the event generated actionable ideas contributing to the development of a more transparent and ethical society.

Exploring the Fijian values of integrity, which are deeply rooted in the concept of vanua, the groups looked at how the values of integrity play a pivotal role in combating corruption and fostering a society built on trust and honesty. Vanua encompasses the interconnectedness of individuals, communities, and the land, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility and the well-being of the whole. It is through the integration of vanua and the embodiment of these values that people actively contribute to the fight against corruption, forging a path towards a just and prosperous society for all.

"The collaboration between UNODC, the NYC of Fiji, and the participating youth groups is crucial in our collective efforts to tackle corruption and promote integrity," said Marie Pegie Cauchois, UNODC Regional Anti-Corruption Advisor. "By empowering young individuals with knowledge and skills, we are nurturing a new generation of leaders who can champion the cause of anti-corruption and inspire positive change in their communities" noted Wessley Manasa Vatanitawake, NYC Interim Secretary & National Treasurer.

The event is aligned with the Teieniwa vision, which emphasizes the importance of fostering ethical values and building a culture of integrity in the Pacific. By instilling these values in young minds, the workshop is to create a ripple effect that will shape a more transparent and corruption-free future for Fiji.

This workshop is only a first step and more gatherings and discussions will be taking place to formulate concrete action plans and strategies that address the identified challenges. UNODC and the NYC of Fiji will continue their collaborative efforts to support youth-led initiatives and guide the implementation of impactful anti-corruption measures.
