UNODC Strengthens Capacities in Trinidad and Tobago to coordination the attention of Children of online child sexual exploitation and abuse

Trinidad and Tobago, 23rd to 26th April 2024. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) through the Global Cybercrime Programme, under the project "Strengthening Trinidad and Tobago's Capabilities to Prevent and Effectively Counter Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Online and Related Offenses" (OCSEA T&T), conducted the "Specialized training and study visit” coordination in the attention of children of online child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The alarming increase in cases of childhood victims of online sexual abuse underscores the urgency of addressing this issue comprehensively. Providing comprehensive care to these children is essential to protect their fundamental rights, support their emotional and psychological recovery, prevent further harm, and facilitate their participation in the justice system. This comprehensive care not only aims to mitigate the traumatic impact of abuse but also to provide the necessary support for children to rebuild their lives and seek justice against perpetrators. It is an indispensable component in the response required to address this serious problem and protect vulnerable children from the risks of the digital world.
The workshop targeted 24 public officials and NGOs from the Police- Child Protection Unit (CPU), Police- Cybercrime and Social Media Unit (CSMU), Police- Special Victims Department (SVD), Police- Counter Trafficking Unit (CTU), Police- Victim and Witness Support Unit (VWSU), Office of the Prime Minister- Gender and Child Affairs, Children's Authority, ChildLine, Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs, Family Planning Association of Trinidad and Tobago, NGO La Casita, The Heroes Foundation, Create Future Good, IOM, Soroptimist International, Archdiocesan Ministry for Migrants & Refugees.
The sessions were focused on Cybercrimes against Children, Human rights and gender considerations, Rights in Cyberspace, Cyberbullying, Grooming, Sexting, Sextortion, Cybercrime, and Digital Evidence, and the presentations of all the Institutions and NGOs that participated.
Furthermore, Study Visits were carried out with the main objective of knowledge in person of the activity’s development in the NGO La Casita and with the Heroes Foundation in Schools.
These actions were carried out with the assistance of the Project Coordinator of OCSEAT T&T of UNODC, thanks to the financial support of the Government of Canada.
