With the mandate to create a safer world against drugs and crime, UNODC is committed to supporting Member States in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This agenda brings together various elements in a broad, forward-looking framework and acknowledges the interrelationship between sustainable development and the fight against drugs and crime, including corruption and terrorism.
The 2030 Agenda reflects a shift in global thinking on how cross-cutting issues—such as the rule of law, effective and humane justice systems, and health-oriented drug responses—are enablers of development, and how their absence hinders development across all countries, regardless of their economic level.
The 2030 Agenda ensures that efforts are holistic and inclusive, supported by partnerships with various stakeholders, and underpinned by increased policy coherence and integration. It aims to reduce the issue of crime prevention and drug control from isolated realms that are not fully integrated into development plans.
In this regard, the 2030 Agenda does not replace or substitute UNODC’s core mandates but helps the Office position and communicate its work within a broader context that includes national and global sustainable development priorities. Thus, UNODC provides significant support to Member States in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a results-based approach in managing its projects and programs.
