Education for the Rule of Law: Advancing Engagement on Human Rights

About the event

The rule of law is fundamental to all aspects of society in forging relationships of mutual accountability, reliability and building public trust. To promote and protect the safety, dignity and human rights of all peoples, Governments have a key role in upholding the rule of law in the daily lives of their citizens, especially through the public institutions that seek to serve them.

Education is the catalytic factor that can strengthen public trust. Education has an important role in promoting the rule of law and a culture of lawfulness - that is, an environment in which the rule of law is understood, respected, and upheld.

This event - co-hosted by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the UN in Geneva - looked at the interlinkages between human rights and rule of law education. In particular, it highlighted the importance of empowering the next generation to uphold the rule of law and human rights.

Participants were invited to add their thoughts to the online conversation using #Act4RuleOfLaw and #StandUp4HumanRights .

The discussion was followed by the opening of an exhibition and a reception.
