UNODC's Integrity & Ethics Modules discussed at the International Legal Ethics Conference and the NIFTEP Workshop on teaching ethics

On 4-8 December 2018, UNODC's Education for Justice (E4J) initiative participated in the 8th International Legal Ethics Conference (ILEC8) and supported the pre-conference Workshop on ethics education organized by United States based National Institute for Teaching Ethics and Professionalism (NIFTEP). Both events were held at the Melbourne Law School in Australia. The ILEC Conference brought together hundreds of university lecturers from law schools across the world; 20 of them participated in the NIFTEP Workshop which was organized around small practical sessions and teaching demonstrations.

The Conference and Workshop included several sessions dedicated to the E4J University Modules on Integrity & Ethics. These sessions aimed to:

  • enhance participants' understanding of the Modules;
  • foster the exchange of views about effective approaches to teaching the Modules in law schools across the world;
  • strengthen the participants' capacity to teach courses based on the Modules;
  • support participants in adapting and integrating the Modules into existing or new courses; and
  • address possible impact assessments of the Modules and other follow-up activities for promoting integrity and ethics education at the university level.

The participating lecturers expressed interest in and commitment to adapting the Modules to their contexts and incorporating them into their courses in 2019. UNODC encouraged them to provide feedback on the quality and user-friendliness of the materials, and to participate in the impact assessment conducted as part of the Organization's efforts to continuously improve the Modules and thereby promote quality integrity and ethics education worldwide.

Having recently completed the development of the E4J University Modules on Integrity & Ethics, UNODC is now focusing on implementation events and engaging as many universities and academics as possible to strengthen integrity and ethics education worldwide. The Conference and Workshop in Melbourne were a key part of this endeavour. The Modules and an associated Teaching Guide are freely available on the E4J website.
