About the UNODC Gender Equality Forum (GEF)

The mission of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is to contribute to global peace and security, human rights and development by making the world safer from drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism by working for and with Member States.  In light of the recently launched UNODC Strategy, UNODC is organizing the GEF, a conference focusing on the gender dimensions of:

- corruption

- criminal justice responses to gender-based violence

- combatting transnational organized crime

Overview of Conference Panels

Panel 1 - Tuesday June 22, 14:00-15:45 (CEST)

The gender dimensions of corruption – UNGASS 2021 political declaration and gender equality

Experts will be invited to discuss bottom-up approaches towards female engagement and reducing corruption. The discussion will reflect on what actions need to be taken to ensure that gender is mainstreamed in anti-corruption legislation and policies and the implications this has on UNODC’s work in supporting the implementation of the UNGASS political declaration.

The panel will be addressing the following questions:

What role does gender play in anti corruption efforts?
Why is female engagement important and how should this be reflected in the implementation of the UNGASS political declaration?

Panel 2 - Wednesday June 23, 14:00-15:30 (CEST)

The gender dimensions of criminal justice – Law enforcement and criminal justice responses to gender-based violence

The panel will reflect on the many forms of gender-based violence that can take place, from violence experienced in conflict settings to the experiences of individuals in their households. The panel will discuss the implications this has on understanding gender-based violence and criminal justice responses, at both the international to the more local level.

The panel will be addressing the following questions:

What challenges do victims of gender-based violence face in accessing victim services and justice and how is this linked to gender?
What impact does this have on women and girls, particularly in the context of eliminating gender-based violence during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond?

Panel 3 - Thursday June 24, 14:00-15:45 (CEST)

The gender dimensions of combatting transnational organized crime

Panel 3 will be discussing the gender dimensions of UNODC’s approach towards combatting transnational organized crimes that fall under the scope of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC). The panel will be discussing the experiences of Member States and the importance of implementing an intersectional approach towards combatting transnational organized crime. Specifically, the panel will be discussing the role of masculinities to understand and to create effectives policies and approaches.

The panel will be addressing the following questions:

What can gender analysis, specifically the analysis of masculinites, tell us about the role of individuals in organized crime?
Why is it important to take an intersectional approach in implementing the United Nations Covention against Transnational Organized Crime?
