VIENNA, 4 October (UN Information Service) – Italy’s offer to host in Palermo in December a high-level conference on the occasion of the opening for signature of a new UN treaty against transnational organized crime was formalized here this morning at a ceremony in the headquarters of the UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP). Signing the host country agreement for the conference were Vincenzo Manno, Italy’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna, and ODCCP Executive Director Pino Arlacchi. The proposed UN Convention against Organized Transnational Crime, along with protocols covering trafficking in women and children, smuggling of migrants and trade in illicit firearms, is expected to be adopted by the Millennium General Assembly some time in November. It will go into effect when 40 countries have ratified it. ***** | ||||
