Within the context of the 'Project on Strengthening the Legal Regime against Terrorism in Yemen', the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch (UNODC/TPB) organized a national workshop for 14 Yemeni Judges in Cairo, from 30 July - 1 August 2016. The workshop covered practical challenges and good practices in supporting victims of acts of terrorism.
The training was designed to facilitate the sharing of experiences on the subject of supporting victims of terrorism, by various countries. These countries included Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, while the Special Tribunal for Lebanon also provided its expertise on the topic.
Recognizing the importance of victims' interest in criminal proceedings, and the relevance of developing comprehensive programmes that effectively provide adequate treatment to victims of acts of terrorism, the workshop also provided participants with legal and practical experiences of national legal frameworks governing the support of victims of terrorist attacks.
The workshop also explored different national experiences in the topic, as presented by each international expert with practical cases, including good practices in the aftermath of terrorist attacks and the steps taken to support victims at different levels.
Participants expressed their satisfaction with the training, and their wish that the UNODC/TPB continues implementing specialized trainings and workshops aimed at strengthening and enhancing the capacity of judges and prosecutors who are handling terrorism cases in Yemen. As such, additional technical assistance and capacity building activities will follow under the same project, including national and regional workshops and specialized trainings.
This workshop was organized under the UNODC/TPB programme for Yemen generously funded by the Government of Japan.
