UNODC Supports Cooperation to Prevent Violent Extremism in South Asia through the SAN-PVE Regional Network

According to the 2023 Global Terrorism Index, South Asia remains the region most severely affected by violent extremism and terrorism worldwide. The growing presence of extremist groups in the area consistently undermines the safety of the local population and increases the risk of radicalization. In this context, cooperation among affected countries is crucial for providing a united response to the challenges posed by the terrorist threat and addressing the underlying conditions that facilitate violent extremism.

Aligned with the UN Secretary General’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism (A/70/674), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has been supporting South Asian countries in developing and implementing a regional network of practitioners focused on preventing violent extremism (SAN-PVE). This network promotes a preventive approach to countering violent extremism through multidisciplinary and inter-agency collaboration.

To highlight the progress and achievements of the network, the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch and the UNODC Regional Office for South Asia organized a side event during the 32nd session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) in Vienna on May 24, 2023. The event focused on "Promoting a South Asia Regional Network of Practitioners for Preventing Violent Extremism (SAN-PVE)."

Delegates from participating countries emphasized the positive advancements made at the national level due to the collective efforts of SAN-PVE. They particularly recognized the importance of this "peer-to-peer networking and learning platform," which facilitates the exchange of knowledge and best practices among practitioners with diverse backgrounds. The discussions also highlighted the network's successful role in promoting a whole-of-society approach by prioritizing human rights, gender-sensitive measures, and initiatives targeting youth. Overall, participants commended the value and achievements of SAN-PVE as a "successful initiative, serving as an exemplary model for other regional forums."
