120 participants from law enforcement, foreign affairs and customs departments discussed the status of drug control and drug use prevention in the region and adopted a number of expert recommendations, which will be submitted to the sixty-second session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in 2019 for its consideration.
The working groups held during the Meeting focused on the role of customs and other law enforcement agencies in effective border management strategies; illicit cultivation and production of drugs, and latest trends in drug-related money-laundering; and inter-agency cooperation within and among countries on the control of precursor chemicals and new psychoactive substances. A post-UNGASS working group on raising awareness about drug-related issues in educational settings was held as well.
The 42nd Meeting of HONLEA, Asia and the Pacific, also considered the follow-up to the to the Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem and to the special session of the General Assembly on the world drug problem, held in April 2016, in view of the request made by the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, in its resolution 56/10, to the meetings of the subsidiary bodies of the Commission to contribute to the monitoring of the implementation by Member States of the Political Declaration and Plan of Action at the regional level by discussing regional views on progress made in that regard.
