Buenos Aires, Argentina, 15 July 2022 – UNODC’s Firearms Trafficking Section facilitated a discussion on the new trends in firearms trafficking in Latin America gathering 37 Heads of the Argentinian Federal Police Units. The objective of this meeting was to spread the awareness among the Chiefs on the problem of illicit firearms, the links to violence, organized crime, drug trafficking and terrorism, the homicide rates in the region, and the routes and new trends of arms trafficking.
The discussion featured a presentation by Ms. Simonetta Grassi, Chief of the UNODC's Firearms Trafficking Section, the Commissioner General Juan Carlos Hernández, Chief of the Argentine Federal Police, the Commissioner General Carlos Alejandro Ñamandu, Chief of the Superintendency of Federal Investigations of the Argentine Federal Police, Dr. Gabriel Gonzalez Da Silva, Prosecutor of the Fiscal Unit for the Investigation of Weapons and Explosives, and Mr. Luis Francisco De Jorge Mesas, Interregional Justice Advisor on Firearms, UNODC.
