18 February 2022 - United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) through its Global Firearms Programme (GFP) has provided to the Security Service of Ukraine the final batch of equipment in support of investigations and legal proceedings against firearms trafficking cases and related crimes.
The Security Service of Ukraine is at the forefront of the fight against illicit circulation of firearms in Ukraine. The IT equipment will increase the effectiveness of its field operations by improving the process of evidence collection, recording and data processing.
The current donation was made through a generous contribution of Germany.
“By responding to the needs expressed by the specialized services, this technical assistance will provide the tools which help to improve the capacity of the Security Service of Ukraine to deal with cases related to firearms trafficking in Ukraine,” said Denys Kadenko, the National Programme Officer Global Firearms Programme UNODC.
UNODC through its GFP continues to assist Ukrainian authorities in implementing the United Nations Firearms Protocol since 2020. UNODC GFP supports the harmonization of criminal legislation with the criminalization provisions of the UN Firearms Protocol, provides capacity building for detection and countering firearms trafficking.
