In 2020, UNODC Global Firearms Programme (GFP) has initiated the process of cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Ukraine on firearms data collection for the purpose of regularly participating in and contributing high quality information to UNODC’s Illicit Arms Flow Initiative (IAFI). As a result, in 2021, the MIA has established a working group to address the challenges identified in the collection of and sharing of firearms related data under UNODC’s Questionnaire on IAFI.
On 23 April 2021, the GFP has facilitated the first meeting of the working group, which is composed of nine members from relevant departments of MIA and the National Police.
The participants discussed the objective of the working group, its main tasks, including review and analysis of UNODC’s questionnaire, identification of firearms data sets that need to be collected, identification of data sources and development of methodology for collection, analysis and exchange of data. The working group also agreed on the format and the schedule of future meetings and identified the agenda for the second meeting in May 2021.
