Niamey, Agadez 6 February 2022 – UNODC, under the framework of the Global Action to address Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants (GLO.ACT-Niger), works on supporting the Government of Niger in the design and implementation of a national data collection and monitoring system on Trafficking in Persons (TIP) and Smuggling of Migrants (SOM). A priority under GLO.ACT is to consolidate an integrated approach to data collection, monitoring and sharing and support the transfers of knowledge and skills from the central to the local level. Therefore, the GLO.ACT team supported the National Agency for the Fight against Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling and the Statistic Department of the Ministry of Justice to deliver a first training workshop on data collection, analysis and sharing for local data providers and focal points in Agadez, from 25 to 26 January 2022.
The objectives of the workshop were to:
Sensitize local actors on their mandate and role in the data collection and analysis processes as well as on the importance of disseminating results;
Strengthen the capacity of participants on specific aspects of data collection and analysis, including data collection modalities, the use of standardized questionnaires, analysis of trends and flows in TIP and smuggling of migrants based on the data collected;
Provide an overview of the importance of having reliable data for identifying and referencing victims of trafficking in persons.
ANLTP/TIM's Director General Ousmane Mamane opened the event, congratulating UNODC on its continued support to the ANLTP/TIM in the fight against TIP and SOM. During the two-day workshop, participants engaged in interactive sessions. They learned from the trainers who had consolidated their skills and knowledge on data collection, analysis and reporting techniques during a training-of-trainers workshop delivered by GLO.ACT the previous months.
Looking ahead, the GLO.ACT team will facilitate a second workshop on data collection, analysis and reporting for local data providers. This is likely to occur in Dosso or Zinder, to ensure more regions of Niger are covered by the project, and additional capacity of local focal points are strengthened.
The Global Action against Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants – Niger (GLO.ACT-Niger, 2019-2022) is a € 500.000 joint initiative by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFA) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). An earlier phase of this project (2015-2019) was supported by the European Union.
The project builds on a global community of practice set in motion in GLO.ACT 2015-2019 and assists the Government of Niger in targeted, innovative and demand-driven interventions: sustaining effective strategy and policy development, strengthening the criminal justice response, and regional and trans-regional cooperation.
This project is funded by the Government of Italy.
