Niamey, Niger 18 December 2021 – On 13 December 2021, UNODC, under the framework of the Global Action against Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants (GLO.ACT) funded by the Government of Italy and as part of its support to the government of Niger, organized, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Fight against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants, an awareness-raising conference targeting students of Abdou Moumouni University in Niamey on the dangers of human trafficking and smuggling of migrants.
Trafficking in Persons (TIP) and Smuggling of Migrants (SOM) are complex realities in Niger. As a country that acts as a departure, transit and destination point for victims of trafficking and smuggled migrants, Niger must address the expansion of criminal networks, both domestically and internationally. To continue enhancing an efficient response to these crimes, the Government of Niger is called upon, amongst other, to intensify its awareness-raising activities towards potential victims on the dangers and the harmful consequences on their lives at the time. This is particularly true when victims are young people, to whom the traffickers - by using modern means of recruitment including social networks - promise a bright future that frequently fails to materialize.
It is in this context that the National Agency for the Fight against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (ANLTP/TIM) and the GLO.ACT team supported the organization of an awareness-raising conference for students of Abdou Moumouni University in Niamey on TIP and SOM. The objectives of the conference were to sensitize students on the dangers related to human trafficking and migrant smuggling, to familiarize students with these concepts and share the context in Niger.
The conference was attended by approximately 250 students. ANLTP/TIM and GLO.ACT were delighted with their active participation in the debates and the question-and-answer session. Communication material was also distributed to support the dissemination of the awareness raising messages. Looking ahead, this event paves the way for a comprehensive approach in the fight against these crimes, particularly to further inform potential victims of the dangers of becoming a trafficking victim and the risks associated with being a smuggled migrant.
The Global Action against Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants – Niger (GLO.ACT-Niger) is a two-year (2019 - 2021), € 500.000 joint initiative by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFA) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). An earlier phase of this project (2015-2019) was supported by the European Union.
The project builds on a global community of practice set in motion in GLO.ACT 2015-2019 and assists the Government of Niger in targeted, innovative and demand-driven interventions: sustaining effective strategy and policy development, strengthening the criminal justice response, and regional and trans-regional cooperation.
