On 18 December 2013, the General Assembly adopted resolution 68/191, entitled "Taking action against gender-related killing of women and girls", which originated at the 2013 session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The resolution requested the Secretary-General to convene an open-ended intergovernmental expert group meeting to discuss ways and means to more effectively prevent, investigate, prosecute and punish gender-related killing of women and girls, with a view to making practical recommendations, drawing also on current best practices, in consultation with relevant United Nations entities and human rights mechanisms. All relevant documents related to the expert group meeting are available on this page.
The General Assembly also invited Member States to provide UNODC with information related to best practices and other relevant information related to the investigation and prosecution of these crimes, in accordance with national legislation, and in that regard encourages civil society organizations and academia to share relevant information with the Office. Updated versions of the summary of replies received from countries and from civil society organizations and academia will be made available to the expert group meeting.
