As part of its wider efforts to support responses to the phenomenon, UNODC and the Office of the Public Prosecutor of Argentina co-organized an online workshop for Argentinian prosecutors on methods to combat terrorist incidents committed on the basis of XRIRB which took place on 4 July 2023. The event was part of the German-funded project "Preventing and Responding to Terrorist Attacks on the Basis of XRIRB".
The event was opened by Armando Antao Cortez, Office of the Public Prosecutor of Argentina; Candice Welsch, Regional Director of UNODC for the Andean Region and the Southern Cone; and Philipp Herzog, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to Argentina. Ms. Welsch highlighted the need to develop a network of professionals to address the XRIRB phenomenon and build international and regional connections against racism.
The online meeting gathered over 45 participants from several national agencies in Argentina and other Latin American countries, including from ministries of interior and justice, Office of the Public Prosecutor, intelligence services, and national police. The event allowed for practitioners to engage in a productive exchange on current XRIRB-related challenges and better understand the legal dynamics at play.
The event underscored the need for Latin American stakeholders to establish methods of international collaboration to detect, intercept and monitor individuals involved in XRIRB terrorism-related activities.
