Ceremonial Opening Segment - 64th session CND (12 April 2021)

to mark the 60th anniversary of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and 50th anniversary of the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances

2021 will mark the 60^th anniversary of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and the 50th anniversary of the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Together with the 1988 Convention, these Conventions constitute the cornerstone of the international drug control system. Most recently, Member States reiterated their commitment to the implementation of these Conventions in the 2019 Ministerial Declaration adopted by the Commission on Narcotic Drugs at its 62^nd session in March 2019.

The three drug control conventions were adopted under the auspices of the United Nations, with the main goals to prevent the abuse of psychoactive substances and ensure their availability for medical and scientific purposes. Adherence is now almost universal.
