At its second session, the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime established an open-ended interim working group on technical assistance to advise and assist the Conference in the implementation of its mandate on technical assistance (Conference decision 2/6).
Furthermore, in its resolution 7/1, entitled "Strengthening the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Protocols thereto", the Conference, inter alia, encouraged the Working Group of Government Experts on Technical Assistance to consider meeting on an annual basis, as needed.
Moreover, in its resolution 9/1, entitled “Establishment of the Mechanism for the Review of the Implementation of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Protocols thereto”, the Conference of the Parties requested the Working Group of Government Experts on Technical Assistance to consider the technical assistance needs identified during the review process and make recommendations to the Conference of the Parties on how to assist States parties in their efforts to implement the Convention and the Protocols.
