		UNODC Youth-led action to prevent violent extremism and terrorism From 4 to 5 December 2023, UNODC convened the inaugural meeting of the youth-led board in Vienna as part of UNODC's wider campaign on Youth-led action to prevent violent extremism. The initiative aims to empower youth leaders and youth-led organizations to prevent and respond to terrorism and violent extremism.

		UNODC Contributes to the EU Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Centres of Excellence-African Union Forum on Reducing CBRN Risks On 12-13 December 2023, UNODC contributed to the first European Union CBRN Centres of Excellence–African Union Forum on mitigating risks related to CBRN materials, which was held by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute on 12-13 December 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 		UNODC Holds First National Training Seminar in Montenegro for Judicial and Prosecution Training Centres on the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism On 11 and 12 December 2023, UNODC conducted a seminar in Montenegro, the first within a series of national seminars for judicial and prosecution training centres, under the new EU Project Union Support for the universalisation and effective implementation of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT). The seminar brought together judges from across the country, prosecutors, inspectors, a representative of the national ecotoxicological research centre, and other government officials. Read more>
		UNODC Supports Latin America to Address Cases Involving the Investigation and Prosecution of Terrorist Acts and Violent Extremism Based on Xenophobia, Racism and Other Forms of Intolerance, or in the Name of Religion or Belief The threat posed by the spread of terrorism based on xenophobia, racism and other forms of intolerance, or in the name of religion or belief (XRIRB) has increased globally over the past few years. In this context, and to assist Member States in better understanding and responding to this phenomenon,UNODC published the Manual on Prevention of and Responses to Terrorist Attacks on the Basis of Xenophobia, Racism and Other Forms of Intolerance, or in the Name of Religion or Belief in April 2022. 		UNODC Commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through a Dedicated Event on Mainstreaming Human Rights in Criminal Justice Responses to Terrorism Terrorism Prevention Branch (UNODC/TPB) organized an event to showcase the ways in which human rights are addressed and mainstreamed in criminal justice responses to terrorism on 11 December. The event, which was attended by 88 participants, highlighted concrete examples of achievements and good practices in mainstreaming human rights by policy makers and practitioners across the globe. 		UNODC Supports South Africa to Address Cases Involving the Investigation and Prosecution of Terrorist Acts and Violent Extremism Based on Xenophobia, Racism and Other Forms of Intolerance, or in the Name of Religion or Belief South Africa has not been immune to XRIRB-based violence over the past decade. To this end, UNODC, with funding from the Federal Republic of Germany, organized a workshop to raise awareness toaddresscases involving the investigation and prosecution of terrorist acts and violent extremism based on XRIRB in the country. 		UNODC Holds First Africa Cooperation Meeting for Law Enforcement to Strengthen Cross-Regional Cooperation against Terrorism in Africa Terrorism Prevention Branch (TPB) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organized the Africa Cooperation Meeting on November 22-24. 		UNODC Supports the Parliamentarians for Global Action through a National Parliamentary Session on Nuclear Security in Cameroon On 15 November, Parliamentarians for Global Action convened an event in Yaoundé, Cameroon to foster dialogue and action to address nuclear security concerns. 		Promoting Accountability for Sexual and Gender Based Violence in Nigeria - International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women Saturday 25th November 2023 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the start of sixteen days of Activism against Gender-based Violence (SGBV). UNODC has been providing longstanding support to Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen criminal justice responses to SGBV. Read more>

		“Policing is nothing without the community”: Strengthening Police and Community Partnerships in Nigeria In September and October 2023, UNODC delivered two workshops to Divisional police officers from Benue, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Plateau states to equip them with the skills to engage the communities they serve, and to promote human rights and gender considerations in their everyday policing duties. 		Republic of the Congo becomes the 123rd State Party to ICSANT On 14 November 2023, the Republic of the Congo deposited its instrument of accession to ICSANT and will soon become the 123rd State party. For over five years, UNODC has been working with the country to facilitate its adherence to the Convention.

		UNODC Holds Induction Session for Mozambican Public Prosecutors and Investigators UNODC organized a training course to enhance GCCCOT’s approach to preventing and combating organized crime, especially matters related to drug trafficking, kidnapping for ransom, and terrorism. The event also aimed to strengthen coordination between GCCCOT’s focal points and investigators assigned to the Office of the Attorney-General of Mozambique. Read more>
		UNODC Supports Malawi to Adopt First National Strategy to Counter Terrorism and Prevent Violent Extremism The Allied Democratic Forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a group in Mozambique pose a significant threat to Southern Africa. The activities of these groups have also recently affected the security of Malawi. As such, Malawi responded by scaling up efforts to prevent and counter terrorism and on 3 October 2023, launched its national counter-terrorism strategy. Read more>
		UNODC Supports South-Eastern Europe and Neighbouring Countries in the Handling of Digital Evidence in Cases related to Terrorist Attacks on the Basis of Xenophobia, Racism and other Forms of Intolerance, or in the Name of Religion or Belief UNODC, with funding from the Federal Republic of Germany, delivered a training onthe preservation, voluntary disclosure, emergency disclosure and mutual legal assistance for XRIRB-related cases for countries of South-Eastern Europe and its neighbours. 		Enhancing Pakistan's Counterterrorism Capabilities: Guiding the Path of Electronic Evidence 25 August 2023, Karachi – The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA), and the Ministry of Interior (MOI) organized a two-day workshop on requesting electronic evidence in terrorism-related cases. 		UNODC and UNICRI Launch Project to Address the Nexus between Terrorism and Transnational Organized Crime in Africa UNODC and the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Institute (UNICRI) launched a joint project on "Strengthening capacity to address the nexus between terrorism and transnational organized crime in Africa" in June 2023 and held a subsequent training workshop in Lomé, Togo on 4-8 September 2023. 		UNODC Supports Mozambique to Investigate Post-Terrorist Attack Crime Scenes The province of Cabo Delgado, located in the northern region of Mozambique, has been greatly affected by terrorist attacks over the past years. In response to some of these challenges, UNODC increased its assistance to the Mozambican government in the area of preventing and countering terrorism. Read more>
		Zimbabwe to Become the 122nd State Party to the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism On 28 September 2023, Zimbabwe deposited its instrument of accession to ICSANT and will soon become 122nd State party to this Convention. 		UNODC Supports Mozambique to Address Terrorist Financing The government of Mozambique has been actively collaborating with UNODC to build a responsive criminal justice system by strengthening its institutional capacity in the investigation, prosecution, and trial of terrorism-related offences. As part of its wider efforts to address these challenges, UNODC delivered a workshop on countering terrorist financing in Maputo on 28 August-1 September 2023. Read more>
		Combatting Terror with Unity: Mainstreaming Gender Power in Eastern Africa Abdirashid Ismail, a prosecutor in Somalia, believes that including more women in the judiciary is essential to effectively combat terrorism in his country. He leads an all-female team working on prosecuting sexual and gender-based violence. Read more>

		Victims' Voices, Silencing Terrorism: A Story of Impact to Prevent Terrorism The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has partnered with Iraqi authorities, in collaboration with the Lebanese Association for Victims of Terrorism (AVT-L), and with funding from the Kingdom of the Netherlands on the project “Supporting victims of terrorism within the criminal justice framework, including psychological support” in Iraq. 		UNODC Concludes Training Series for Mozambican Officials to Become Trainers in the Fields of Counter-Terrorism and Counter Terrorist Financing On 18 August 2023, UNODC marked the end of a three-part train-the-trainer cycle with a training in the city of Beira, Mozambique to increase the capacity of the country’s criminal justice institutions and law enforcement agencies to effectively counter terrorist activity and its financing. 		Republic of Albania to Become the 121st State Party to ICSANT Five Years of Excellent Cooperation in this Field with UNODC In a significant stride towards global nuclear security, UNODC's dedicated efforts have propelled the Republic of Albania to become the 121st party to the ICSANT Convention. 		UNODC Supports Central Asian Countries Through Regional Training on Transborder Operations UNODC delivered a training on enhancing regional cross-border cooperation by strengthening the capacity of border liaison offices in Central Asia in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 7-11 August 2023. 		UNODC Promotes Nigeria’s Victims Support Fund on this International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism The Boko Haram insurgency in northeast Nigeria began over a decade ago. Since then, more than 35,000 people have been killed in the conflict. In 2014, the Nigerian government established the Victims Support Fund (VSF) which UNODC supports. Read More>

		UNODC Strengthens Responses to Terrorist Threats on the Basis of Xenophobia, Racism and other forms of Intolerance, or in the Name of Religion or Belief (XRIRB) in Argentina UNODC co-organized an online workshop on combating terrorism based on xenophobia, racism, and intolerance, which took place on 4 July 2023.
